As Pakistan’s digital economy continues to expand, empowering freelancers and creators requires more than isolated platforms. In this conversation, Sher Alam explains how SMAC is building an integrated ecosystem where professionals can connect, learn, showcase their expertise, and earn through a single, locally designed digital platform.
Boardroom: What market gap inspired the creation of SMAC?
Sher Alam: SMAC was born out of a clear frustration. Digital professionals in Pakistan were forced to juggle five or more disconnected platforms, socializing on Facebook, learning on Udemy, selling products on Daraz, offering services on Fiverr, and communicating on WhatsApp. None of these platforms connect learning with earning, and international ones charge crippling fees of up to 37%. There was simply no localized, PKR native ecosystem that combined social networking, commerce, and education under one roof, so we built SMAC to unite all six capabilities in a single, affordable super app made for Pakistan’s fast growing digital economy.
Boardroom: How do you differentiate SMAC from conventional freelance marketplaces?
Sher Alam: Conventional freelance marketplaces like Fiverr and Upwork are transaction only. They let you sell, but you must build your audience somewhere else entirely. SMAC integrates a full social layer, so freelancers grow their following, showcase their work, and sell their services all in one place. Registration is completely free with no bank or card details required to sign up, unlike other platforms, and we charge a simple 5% only after each transaction is completed, far below the fees of up to 20% on competing marketplaces. In short, we are not just a marketplace, we are a complete social commerce ecosystem where community drives discovery and sales.
Boardroom: What role does verification play in building trust across your platform?
Sher Alam Khan: Trust is the foundation of any marketplace, which is why verification is built into SMAC from the very first interaction. Every account is secured through email verification and Google OAuth, backed by JWT based sessions and strict password security rules. Our admin dashboard gives us full oversight to review, approve, block, or remove users and listings, ensuring the ecosystem stays clean and credible. Combined with transparent seller profiles and a structured refund system, verification allows buyers and sellers to transact with genuine confidence.
Boardroom: How do you balance affordability with quality assurance for clients?
Sher Alam: Affordability and quality are not opposing goals at SMAC. Our low 5% fee structure keeps costs down for both buyers and sellers, while our platform controls protect the client experience. Every listing passes through an admin managed taxonomy and review process, and our guided four step creation wizard ensures content is complete and professional before it goes live. A built in refund request system, with a three way chat between buyer, seller, and admin, guarantees that if something falls short, clients have a clear path to resolution.
Boardroom: What challenges do freelancers and educators face that SMAC is solving?
Sher Alam: Freelancers and educators today are squeezed by high platform fees, fragmented tools, and audiences that live on entirely different apps from where they actually sell. Educators lose up to 37% of their revenue on platforms like Udemy, while freelancers pay as much as 20% on Fiverr and still have to market themselves on Instagram or WhatsApp. SMAC solves this by letting them build an audience, publish courses or services, and earn, all in one platform, while keeping far more of what they make. We also provide localized PKR pricing and payments, removing the currency and accessibility barriers of international platforms.
Boardroom: How does your platform create sustainable income opportunities for digital professionals?
Sher Alam: SMAC turns a single profile into multiple income streams, as users can sell products, offer services, and publish courses at the same time, all discoverable through the social feed. Because registration is free and our 5% fee is charged only after a transaction completes, professionals keep the vast majority of their earnings. The integrated dashboard lets them track revenue, manage refunds, and request withdrawals easily, and because social engagement drives organic discovery, sellers gain customers without heavy advertising spend. This mix of free entry, low fees, multiple revenue channels, and built in audience growth creates genuinely sustainable, compounding income.
Boardroom: What role does AI and automation play in your long-term product strategy?
Sher Alam: AI and automation are central to our next phase of growth and are a major focus of the investment we are raising. In the near term, we are building AI powered recommendations to personalize discovery across courses, products, and services, helping the right buyers find the right sellers automatically. Our unified global search already fetches five content types in a single optimized request, and we will layer intelligent ranking and matching on top of it. Over the longer term, automation will power seller analytics, smart content moderation, and personalized learning pathways, making the platform smarter and more efficient at scale.
Boardroom: How do you approach scaling while maintaining service quality and user trust?
Sher Alam: Our architecture was engineered for scale from day one, with a modern React and Redux front end, real time Socket.IO infrastructure, and a centralized, modular API layer with over 50 endpoints. Quality is preserved through consistent platform wide patterns, admin oversight on every module, and a robust refund and dispute system that keeps trust intact as volume grows. As we expand, investment will go toward backend scaling, server infrastructure, and a dedicated customer support team to maintain responsiveness. We believe disciplined engineering plus strong governance lets us grow fast without compromising the user experience.
Boardroom: What opportunities do you see for Pakistan in the global freelance economy?
Sher Alam: Pakistan is uniquely positioned, ranking among the world’s top 5 freelance nations, with an estimated 2.3 to 3 million active freelancers, 120 million plus internet users, a $7.6 billion e-commerce market growing over 25% year on year, and a population that is 60% under the age of thirty. This is an enormous, young, digitally native talent pool that is currently underserved by expensive international platforms. SMAC’s opportunity is to give this workforce a homegrown ecosystem with localized pricing, PKR payments, and integrated social discovery. By empowering Pakistani talent locally, we can help them compete and earn on a global stage while keeping more value within the national economy.
Boardroom: What is your long-term vision for SMAC as a digital talent ecosystem?
Sher Alam: Our long-term vision is for SMAC to become the definitive digital talent ecosystem of the region, the single place where people connect, learn, and earn throughout their entire professional journey. We plan to expand from web to a full mobile app, add local payment integrations like JazzCash and EasyPaisa, introduce course certifications, and support multiple languages including Urdu and Arabic. Beyond that, we envision white label enterprise solutions, an affiliate program, and an API marketplace that lets SMAC power other businesses. Ultimately, we want SMAC to be the economic backbone for millions of digital professionals across Pakistan and beyond.
