In an era where consumers seek products that reflect personality and emotion, craftsmanship has become a defining competitive advantage. In this conversation, Hamna Amir shares how Candle Corner is transforming handcrafted candles into meaningful lifestyle experiences through creativity, quality, storytelling, and an unwavering commitment to customer delight.
Boardroom: What inspired the idea behind Candle Corner, and how did the journey begin?
Hamna Amir: Candle Corner was born out of a deeply personal passion shared between my sister and me. We have always loved candles, particularly scented ones, and our room was always filled with them. However, whenever we searched for candles that felt unique, aesthetically pleasing, and high in quality, we found ourselves disappointed by the limited options available. Most products in the market either lacked creativity or failed to meet the quality standards we desired. Instead of settling, we decided to create the kind of candles we wanted for ourselves; distinctive, visually appealing, and thoughtfully designed. What began as a personal creative pursuit gradually transformed into a business with a larger purpose.
Boardroom: How would you define Candle Corner’s brand philosophy?
Hamna Amir: At its core, Candle Corner is about creating experiences rather than simply selling candles. We believe candles today represent far more than functionality. They have evolved into elements of lifestyle, home aesthetics, gifting, and self-expression. Our focus is on combining premium quality with thoughtful craftsmanship to create products that feel personal and meaningful. We have always prioritized quality over quantity because we believe customers remember how a product made them feel.
Boardroom: Candles are no longer merely functional products. How has consumer behavior changed in this category?
Hamna Amir: Consumer behavior has shifted significantly. Traditionally, candles were viewed primarily as utility products. Today, they have become an extension of personal lifestyle and home décor. People purchase candles to create comforting spaces, improve ambiance, enhance aesthetics, and even reflect their personality. Particularly among younger consumers, candles are associated with self-care, cozy living, and emotional well-being. This transformation has expanded the category from necessity to experience.
Boardroom: Who is your primary target audience, and why?
Hamna Amir: Our primary audience is Gen Z. Much of our growth has come through platforms like Instagram, where younger audiences actively explore lifestyle products, gifting ideas, and aesthetic home décor. Gen Z consumers are digitally connected and comfortable with online shopping. More importantly, they value originality, personalization, and products that align with their lifestyle choices. We intentionally design and market our offerings to resonate with this audience. Interestingly, a significant majority of our customers are women who are particularly drawn toward self-care, home aesthetics, and meaningful gifting.
Boardroom: Fragrance appears to be an important aspect of your brand. How do you decide which scents to introduce?
Hamna Amir: Fragrance selection is both intuitive and research-driven. Since we have personally been candle enthusiasts for years, we naturally understand what fragrances resonate with customers. Scents such as vanilla, chocolate, fruity blends, and floral notes are consistently popular. At the same time, we actively follow seasonal and consumer trends. For example, spring and summer collections typically feature lighter, fresher, and floral fragrances, while autumn and winter inspire warmer, richer, and more comforting scents. We believe fragrance should complement mood, season, and atmosphere.
Boardroom: How important is storytelling in building a candle brand?
Hamna Amir: Storytelling is central to our brand identity. Candles are deeply emotional products, especially when associated with gifting and special moments. We often build campaigns around occasions such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and celebrations where emotional connection matters. Rather than marketing a candle as just another product, we position it as part of a meaningful moment: a gesture of appreciation, comfort, or affection. This emotional association helps customers connect with the brand more personally. In many ways, we are not just selling candles; we are helping people celebrate relationships and memories.
Boardroom: Social media seems to play an important role in your growth. How has it shaped your business?
Hamna Amir: Social media has been instrumental in our growth journey. Platforms like Instagram have allowed us to showcase our creativity visually and connect directly with customers. Since candles are highly aesthetic products, visual presentation matters significantly. We also leverage trends around home décor, cozy living, gifting culture, and lifestyle aesthetics, which are particularly popular among younger consumers. These trends help us remain relevant and visible within an increasingly competitive market. Digital platforms have effectively become our storefront.
Boardroom: What are some of the biggest challenges in running a handmade candle business?
Hamna Amir: One of our biggest challenges is managing bulk orders without compromising quality. Every candle we create is handmade, which means the process requires time, precision, and attention to detail. Customers sometimes expect large orders to be completed within a few days, not fully realizing the effort involved in handcrafted production. As a small business, scaling production while maintaining consistency can be challenging. Limited molds, production timelines, and personalization requirements all add complexity. However, we remain firm in our commitment to quality.
Boardroom: You mentioned refusing orders at times. Why is maintaining quality so important?
Hamna Amir: We believe long-term trust matters more than short-term revenue. There have been occasions when we declined bulk orders because fulfilling them within unrealistic timelines would have compromised product quality. For many small businesses, refusing orders may seem difficult, but we strongly believe consistency defines brand credibility. If a customer receives a product that does not reflect our standards, it affects trust. We would rather say no than deliver something that falls short of our promise. Quality is not simply a business strategy for us; it is part of our identity.
Boardroom: Beyond individual gifting, do you see broader commercial opportunities for Candle Corner?
Hamna Amir: Absolutely. We are increasingly seeing demand for candles in corporate gifting, event giveaways, PR packages, and branded experiences. Businesses often look for thoughtful products to include in influencer packages, client gifts, and event hampers. This creates exciting opportunities for us to move beyond traditional retail and explore partnerships within the corporate and lifestyle sectors. The gifting economy itself is evolving rapidly, and handcrafted products are becoming increasingly relevant within that space.
Boardroom: What is your long-term vision for Candle Corner?
Hamna Amir: Our ambition is to establish Candle Corner as one of Pakistan’s leading lifestyle candle brands known for quality, creativity, and customer experience. In the long run, we envision expanding beyond candles into a broader lifestyle and home décor brand. This could include complementary products such as fragrances, wax-based décor, home accessories, and other aesthetically driven offerings. We want Candle Corner to become synonymous with warmth, comfort, and meaningful living experiences.
Boardroom: What larger message would you like Candle Corner to represent?
Hamna Amir: We want Candle Corner to remind people that small details matter. Something as simple as a candle can transform a space, elevate a mood, or make someone feel valued. In an increasingly fast-paced world, we believe there is beauty in slowing down and creating moments of comfort and connection. For us, every candle represents not only craftsmanship but also intention, warmth, and care.
