As consumers become increasingly conscious of nutrition and dietary needs, accessible health-focused food is more important than ever. In this conversation, Maria Ameer shares how Ootien is transforming Pakistan’s allergen-free food landscape by combining affordability, innovation, education, and trust to make healthier living accessible for everyone.
Boardroom: What inspired the idea behind Gluten Free Food by Ootien?
Maria Ameer: As someone living with celiac disease myself, I experienced firsthand how difficult it was to find safe, affordable, and trustworthy gluten-free food options in Pakistan. Most available products were either imported, expensive, or lacked proper awareness around allergens. That personal struggle inspired me to create Ootien, a brand focused on making allergen-free food accessible, nutritious, and affordable for everyone.
Boardroom: How do you position your brand in the evolving health-conscious food market?
Maria Ameer: We position Ootien as a wellness-driven and inclusive food brand that goes beyond trends. Our focus is not only gluten-free products, but also creating food solutions for people with dietary restrictions, allergies, diabetes, and lifestyle-based nutritional needs. So, we are providing all in one allergy free products (gluten free, lactose free, egg free) collectively in 1 product. We aim to combine health, affordability, taste, and accessibility in one ecosystem.
Boardroom: What gap did you identify in the availability of gluten-free products?
Maria Ameer: The biggest gap was the lack of affordable and locally produced gluten-free food in Pakistan. Many consumers had limited awareness, very few choices, and concerns regarding contamination, labeling, and nutritional value. We identified the need for safe everyday staples; such as flour, bread, snacks, and bakery items, that people could trust and regularly consume without financial burden.
Boardroom: How do you balance nutrition, taste, and product innovation?
Maria Ameer: We focus heavily on research, ingredient selection, and continuous testing. Our goal is to ensure that healthier food does not compromise on taste or texture. We work on improving recipes using functional ingredients that provide better nutrition while keeping products enjoyable and practical for daily use. Innovation for us means creating products that are both health- supportive and consumer-friendly.
Boardroom: What challenges do consumers commonly face when transitioning to gluten-free lifestyles?
Maria Ameer: One of the biggest challenges is lack of awareness. Many people do not fully understand hidden gluten sources, cross-contamination risks, or how to maintain balanced nutrition after eliminating gluten. Affordability, limited availability, and poor taste experiences from existing products are also major barriers. This transition becomes emotionally and financially difficult for many families.
Boardroom: How do you educate customers beyond simply selling products?
Maria Ameer: Education is a core part of our mission. We actively create awareness through digital content, community engagement, consultations, and informative campaigns around food allergies, celiac disease, nutrition, and healthy eating habits. We want consumers to understand why ingredient transparency and allergen safety matter, not just purchase products.
Boardroom: What role does personalization and customer feedback play in product development?
Maria Ameer: Customer feedback plays a major role in shaping our products. Since dietary needs vary from person to person, we carefully listen to consumer preferences, allergy concerns, taste expectations, and lifestyle challenges. This helps us improve formulations and create products that genuinely solve consumer problems rather than following generic market trends.
Boardroom: How do you maintain quality and trust in a niche food category?
Maria Ameer: Trust is extremely important in allergen-free food because consumers rely on safety and consistency. We prioritize ingredient transparency, careful sourcing, hygienic production practices, and continuous quality improvement. Our aim is to build long-term consumer confidence by ensuring our products remain reliable, safe, and aligned with health standards.
Boardroom: How do you see consumer awareness around functional and dietary foods evolving?
Maria Ameer: Consumer awareness is growing rapidly, especially among younger generations and health-conscious families. People are becoming more mindful about ingredients, digestive health, allergies, diabetes, and preventive nutrition. I believe the future of food will move toward cleaner labels, functional nutrition, and personalized dietary solutions rather than just conventional
processed products.
Boardroom: What is your long-term vision for Gluten Free Food by Ootien as a wellness-driven food brand?
Maria Ameer: Our long-term vision is to make Ootien a leading wellness and allergen-free food brand in Pakistan and beyond. We aim to build an ecosystem that combines food innovation, awareness, accessibility, and technology to support healthier lifestyles. Beyond products, we want Ootien to become a trusted platform that empowers people to make safer and healthier food choices every day.
